in the wrong again

they've come to take me down
and head straight for the clouds
speed-reading me my rights
and i'm in the wrong again

they've come to settle ends
and take me for the fool i am
sending letters in that i couldn't write
and finding it hard to sleep at night
with the light on

i read your Island
and i spent some time alone
with your Little Diamond
to see how bright she'd glow

they've come to appraise your height
and fill their cups with your
god-sweet light
in the background there's a painting
of your younger self
and all that it stood for
has faded out

i've come to make things clear
i know you tried to be good this year
but even the best of us
can't hide our little failures
and why should i try
when i don't even care?

and i'm getting through to you at last
and i have every intention of proceeding with this
and by the time you get yours back
i'll be gone in the wrong way again

so you've come to make amends
and set things right well what good is that?
in a paperback you find yourself staring out
and wonder if there's more of you
in this fiction than in yourself

and i'm getting through to you at last
and i have every intention of proceeding with this
and by the time you get yours back
i'll be gone in the wrong way again
