The following are a few of my favorite hauntings. It is difficult to keep the list to only five.
Burnaby Arts Centre
6400 Block, Deer Lake Avenue, Burnaby
There is little doubt that this cluster of fine old homes and out buildings is the most haunted site in this province. Fairacres (now the Burnaby Art Gallery) appears to be the centre of paranormal activity on the site. Sounds coming from the third floor of the mansion, and the apparition of an elderly woman are only a few of the manifestations associated with the beautiful old house.
Mathers House
Used by the city arts department as a venue for pottery, drawing and painting programs, the building has been the site of paranormal activity including the sound of very young children playing. Visitors frequently remark on the oppressive atmosphere associated with the former residence.
James Cowan Theatre
On a number of occasions, custodial staff working there have seen an apparition of a woman in the dressings rooms. Paranormal activity has apparently decreased during the last few years.
Historic Hat Creek Ranch
At the junction of Highway 97 and 99
The old roadhouse and outbuildings have a long history of paranormal activity including a phantom child seen playing on the grounds. What is most remarkable about this site is the range of activity that takes place.
Victoria Golf Club, the Seventh Tee
Overlooking the Strait of Juan de Fuca in the municipality of Oak Bay.
The ghost of a murdered young woman wearing a wedding dress has been seen by dozens of witnesses over the years. In the spring high school and university students maintain night vigils at the spot where the ghost is usually seen.
Qualicum Heritage Inn
College Road, Qualicum
Once a boarding school for boys, the Qualicum Heritage Inn seems to have an active link with the past. The ghost of the former grounds keeper is known to haunt his old room, a young boy in school uniform has been seen in a corridor and, perhaps strangest of all, chanting has be heard at night. The hotel continues remain a very active site.
Vogue Theatre
918 Granville Street, Vancouver
The future of the Vogue may be in doubt, and for those interested in Vancouver history, it would be tragic to lose one of the three magnificent queens of Granville. And if there is no longer a theatre there, where would the dapper ghost of the Vogue go? A man in a white dinner jacket has been seen and heard a number of times, and he has been known to play a mean set of drums on the theatre stage.
